It is with profound sadness that the family of Dr. Mgwebi Snail ka Mtuze announces his peaceful passing on 9 August 2025 in Pretoria.


Dr. Snail ka Mtuze was a highly respected scholar, author, and cultural custodian, whose life’s work contributed immensely to the preservation and promotion of African literature, language, and heritage. Dr. Mgwebi Lavin Snail ka Mtuze was passionate about pan africanism, and black consciousness and Africanism.

 

He got his BA and BA Hons at Fort Hare University, his Masters Degree at Bayreuth University and DPhil at Bayreuth University and was a fellow at Oxford University. He taught History both at UNISA And Vista Bloemfontein where he was also Head of Department of History. He dedicated decades of his life to education, public service, and community development, inspiring countless individuals through his writings, teachings, and leadership.


He will be remembered not only for his intellectual brilliance, but also for his warmth, humility, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others. His impact will continue to be felt in the lives of the many people and communities he touched. He was a member of The Black Consciousness Movement and later a member of the PAC and APLA. 


He will be missed by his Wife Nomangwane, his daughter, sons and grandchildren. The family kindly requests privacy during this period of mourning. Memorial and funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
